The Santa Fe International Film Festival (SFiFF) returns October 15–20, 2025, as New Mexico’s leading forum for international and independent cinema. Founded in 2009, the festival has grown into a globally recognized event, presenting features, shorts, documentaries, and animated works.

About the Santa Fe International Film Festival

Now in its 17th year, SFiFF has welcomed more than 145,000 attendees since its founding and presents over 300 hours of programming, making it the largest event of its kind in New Mexico.

In 2022, the event rebranded from the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival to the Santa Fe International Film Festival, reflecting its growing global reach. It is also an Oscar®-qualifying festival in three short film categories, making it a launchpad for filmmakers with Academy Award ambitions.

Each October, Santa Fe transforms into a gathering place for directors, producers, screenwriters, and cinephiles. In addition to screenings, SFiFF hosts panels, award ceremonies, and after-hours events that draw both industry professionals and passionate audiences.

Why SFiFF Matters

Recognition by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® distinguishes SFiFF from other regional film festivals.

Winners of the Best Narrative Short, Best Animated Short, and Best Documentary Short automatically qualify for Oscar® consideration, a distinction that has elevated the festival’s reputation on the world stage.

SFiFF has also earned consistent praise from major industry voices. MovieMaker Magazine has ranked it among the “50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” for the third consecutive year (2025), while IndieWire has dubbed it “a young Sundance,” underscoring its growing influence.

For filmmakers, SFiFF provides career-shaping visibility; for audiences, it delivers access to films rarely seen in traditional theaters.

What to Expect at the 2025 Festival

The 2025 program runs for six days and features a dynamic mix of events:

  • Premieres: World and U.S. debuts across narrative, documentary, and animated genres.
  • Filmmaker Q&As and Panels: Interactive conversations with directors, writers, and producers.
  • Awards: Recognition of cinematic excellence and innovation.
  • Evening Events: Parties and networking opportunities across downtown Santa Fe.

Screenings take place in some of the city’s most celebrated venues:

  • The Lensic Performing Arts Center
  • Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA)
  • Violet Crown Cinema
  • Jean Cocteau Cinema, owned by George R.R. Martin
  • New Mexico History Museum
  • Kathryn O’Keeffe Theater on Museum Hill

Together, these venues have helped establish Santa Fe as one of the world’s great cinema cities.

A Legacy of Acclaimed Guests

Over the years, SFiFF has welcomed a remarkable roster of actors, directors, and authors, including Oliver Stone, Robert Redford, Shirley MacLaine, Ethan Hawke, Melissa Barrera, and Judy Blume.

In recent seasons, Bryan Cranston, Zahn McClarnon, and Sterlin Harjo have also appeared, reflecting the festival’s ongoing relevance across generations of filmmakers. This tradition continues in 2025, bringing established stars and emerging voices together in an intimate festival environment.

Supporting Film Communities

SFiFF may take place over just six days, but it’s part of a year-round effort to sustain the arts and strengthen New Mexico’s creative community. Volunteers are central to its success, serving as ushers, box office staff, drivers, and event hosts, while memberships and sponsorships unlock benefits such as VIP receptions, filmmaker brunches, and exclusive screenings. Learn more on their Volunteer page.

The Santa Fe Film Institute, the festival’s parent nonprofit, extends this mission with scholarship programs, filmmaker grants, and fiscal sponsorships that empower independent creators and elevate new voices.

It also produces Film Talk Weekly, a radio program discussing New Mexico’s incredible film industry. Together, SFiFF and the institute foster education, career development, and community connection — making Santa Fe not just a festival city, but a film city year-round.
