Meet El Rancho de Las Golondrinas
El Rancho de Las Golondrinas is a museum built for movement. Instead of static galleries, its 500-acre site south of Santa Fe functions as a historical environment where buildings, tools, and materials are put to use in daily demonstrations from June through October.
Structures on the property span several time periods, including a reconstructed 18th-century placita, a colonial-era mill, and a 19th-century schoolhouse. Inside and around them, staff and volunteers carry out the kinds of work that once defined life in Northern New Mexico, such as hand-processing wool, baking bread in outdoor hornos, and irrigating gardens with water from acequias. The property also includes the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve.
Agricultural work still continues on parts of the property, including fields planted with traditional crops and pens housing heritage livestock. But it is the human element that defines the museum’s purpose. Interpreters are present to answer questions, demonstrate techniques passed down over generations, and share their working knowledge with visitors.
The seasonal calendar includes more than just educational programming. Alongside hands-on demonstrations and walking tours are large-scale public festivals. These gatherings bring music, food, and local vendors into the mix, offering a more festive way to engage with the site.
The 2025 event schedule includes both returning favorites and recurring educational programs:
Santa Fe Spring Festival – June 7 – 8
Wetlands and Watersheds: A Walking Tour of Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve – June 11
Summer at the Preserve: A Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve Walk and Talk – June 21

In addition to festivals, the museum hosts hands-on programs like Can You Dig It?, a family-friendly archaeology series where participants learn excavation basics and artifact identification.
For those interested in a deeper dive, self-guided and private walking tours offer a closer look at the site’s buildings, landscapes, and layered histories.
Self-guided visits are welcome Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June through October. Private tours and school groups may be scheduled between April and October.
Admission should be secured in advance, especially for popular festival weekends. Walk-up tickets may not be available.
Plan your visit to experience a place where the past is not only remembered, but lived.
