SITE SANTA FE presents Once Within a Time, a groundbreaking exhibition opening to the public on June 27, 2025, in Santa Fe’s Railyard Arts District, running through January 2026. This immersive art experience blends mythology, time, and contemporary art, creating a space to reflect on how we understand history and narrative. Featuring over 90 participants, the exhibition explores the stories that shape our collective experience.

As one of the standout Santa Fe art exhibitions, Once Within a Time provides a unique opportunity for art lovers to engage with thought-provoking themes. It’s a must-see addition to any Santa Fe itinerary!

An Art Experience Bridging Past and Present

SITE SANTA FE’s 12th International Exhibition, Once Within a Time, curated by Cecilia Alemani, offers a compelling look at how contemporary art can shift the way we think about time, storytelling, and material through the lens of key figures in New Mexico’s history and mythology. Featuring a wide range of mediums, the exhibition resists linear thinking and instead loops back through shared symbols, materials, and gestures.

As visitors move through the immersive exhibition, they are invited to reconsider how time influences perceptions and storytelling. These works aren’t passive; they invite reflection, interaction, and a sense of presence that’s rarely found in static displays. With Santa Fe and New Mexico figures of interests highlighted throughout the many exhibition venues, the exhibition becomes a sprawling family album of local lore, history, and mythology in which artists engage with their stories and generate new narratives of place.

This is an exhibition where the blend of traditional techniques with cutting-edge approaches is not just a stylistic choice but a deliberate act of reinterpreting art history. The innovative use of materials and methods creates a conversation between the past and the future, suggesting that art is not only a reflection of where we’ve been but also a blueprint for where we are headed.

The result is an experience that feels timely and rooted in experimentation — an exhibition that transforms space into something shared, present, and in motion.

Featured Artists and Works

This year’s exhibition will feature over 90 artists working across a wide range of mediums, including film, sculpture, textiles, and performance. The works on display reflect the theme of connecting mythology with contemporary issues, using narrative and symbolism to explore the complexities of identity, tradition, and modern life. As always, SITE Santa Fe presents art that challenges perceptions, inviting visitors to engage with intellectually stimulating works that spark dialogue and reflection.

Among the participants this year are artists whose practices span both medium and message in powerful ways. Photographer Louise Lawler examines the context and consumption of art itself, while Simone Leigh’s sculptures bring Black feminist thought and diasporic histories to the foreground through evocative form and material.

Louise Bonnet contributes emotionally charged paintings with surreal and exaggerated figures, and Raven Halfmoon’s monumental ceramic works bridge Indigenous tradition and contemporary expression. In photography, Will Wilson reimagines portraiture through a Diné (Navajo) lens, offering nuanced counter-narratives to historical representations.

These five artists represent just a fraction of the artistry on view. The exhibition features an extraordinary lineup of emerging and established voices from around the world, each offering fresh interpretations and unexpected approaches. There’s an abundance of work that will surprise, challenge, and stay with you long after you leave the gallery.

You can find the full list of participants on the SITE Santa Fe website.

Why Visitors Should Attend

Once Within a Time at SITE Santa Fe presents a compelling opportunity to engage with art that explores contemporary issues through the lens of mythology. The exhibition’s design encourages a variety of interpretive pathways, allowing each visitor to find their own understanding of the work.

The exhibition offers a thoughtful exploration of global themes across diverse mediums. To fully appreciate the depth of the pieces, it’s recommended to spend at least 90 minutes on-site. The exhibition is so layered that each visit reveals something new, inviting multiple returns for fresh insights.

For those looking to engage with Santa Fe’s cultural attractions, SITE Santa Fe stands out as a must-see destination in the city’s art scene.

Founded in 1995 with the launch of its first International Biennial, SITE Santa Fe has become a vital force in contemporary art, known for presenting bold, experimental work that engages with urgent global and social issues.

Through major exhibitions, artist commissions, performances, and public programs, SITE supports both established and emerging artists while creating space for dialogue around the most pressing ideas of our time.

As a nonprofit art foundation, SITE offers a robust calendar of talks, screenings, and educational initiatives designed to connect art with audiences in meaningful ways. From school tours and workshops to thought-provoking panels and community collaborations, SITE prioritizes accessibility and relevance in everything it does.

Family-friendly offerings, including interactive installations and hands-on learning opportunities, ensure that younger visitors feel welcome. If you’re wondering whether SITE Santa Fe is a good fit for kids — the answer is yes. Its programming is designed to spark curiosity across all ages.

The Impact of the Exhibition

Once Within a Time takes its name from a 2022 film by Santa Fe–based filmmaker Godfrey Reggio. The film’s blend of fable and dystopia informed the exhibition’s nonlinear approach, where layered narratives and shifting perspectives examine how stories shape shared memory and space.

Alemani’s curation brings together over 90 participants in a thoughtful presentation that contributes meaningfully to ongoing conversations in contemporary art. Works throughout the exhibition encourage direct, thoughtful engagement with installation art, often incorporating symbolic references drawn from mythology in modern art.

The result is an exhibition that creates room for visitors to reconsider their relationship with time, narrative, and collective experience.

An Invitation to Reflect and Reimagine

SITE Santa Fe has long been a beacon for New Mexico contemporary art, and Once Within a Time continues this tradition by offering an invitation to engage with the complex interplay of narrative, history, and possibility.

The exhibition encourages visitors to reconsider their relationship with time and the stories that shape our understanding of the world. It’s an opportunity to interact with thought-provoking installation art that addresses contemporary issues and explores the space between the fantastical and the real.

Visit SITE Santa Fe to see this exceptional exhibition firsthand. It’s a rare chance to encounter powerful, timely work brought together with clarity and vision.

No late-summer visit to Santa Fe would be complete without exploring the 103rd annual Santa Fe Indian Market, August 16 and 17, 2025. Get ready for the experience by reading our Official Santa Fe Indian Market Artist Directory & Booth Guide, either as a collectible physical copy or right here online.

For the fifth year, Hutton Broadcasting has partnered with the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) to create this guide. It lists all the participating artists and their booth assignments, plus it provides a handy, detailed map of the entire market. This year’s glossy magazine includes in-depth articles on contemporary Native potters, Indigenous photographers and writers, regalia, and jewelry favorites bracelets and bolo ties.

The guide also includes the complete SWAIA calendar of events and an Around Town listing of Indian Market-related events happening throughout Santa Fe. Be sure to check out last year’s award winning entries, too, and the other informative articles.

The Official Santa Fe Indian Market Artist Directory & Booth Guide is available here as a digital flipbook. Physical copies will be distributed throughout Santa Fe art galleries, hotels, cafés, restaurants, and other popular locations. They will also be distributed at the market itself if you can’t get one in advance.

As you plan your visit to the hundreds of artist booths, you’ll find the 15-page artist directory to be especially helpful as artists are listed by category and then by name. The map helps you pinpoint where you can find their numbered booths. Use this handy guide to select the activities you don’t want to miss and the artists you just have to visit.

SWAIA Partnership

Jamie Schulze, the executive director of SWAIA, says, “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering again this year with Hutton Broadcasting to create the booth guide for the Santa Fe Indian Market. What they created this year is an absolutely beautiful publication, filled with quality, well-written editorial content, in-depth listings of calendar events and programming, and wonderful photography, all in an easy-to-read and accessible format for all of our attendees. And, of course, complete listings of all our booths and artists category by category.”

Indian Market Artist Directory & Booth Guide Advertisers

No undertaking like the Indian Market Artist Directory & Booth Guide could be accomplished without the support of local galleries and other organizations which advertise in the guide.

Hutton Broadcasting’s Vice President of Sales Art Trujillo says, “We appreciate the support of the many businesses that are part of the artist directory. We couldn’t publish it without their support. In the long run, the magazine is really all about how we can help SWAIA artists market their products to the public and our advertisers help us achieve that goal.”

About the Santa Fe Indian Market

This year marks the 103rd year of the Santa Fe Indian Market, which brings Indigenous artists and art collectors together for two days on the Santa Fe Plaza. Artists are juried into nine categories: Jewelry, Sculpture, 2-D Art, Basketry, Beadwork and Quillwork, Pueblo Wooden Carvings, Pottery, Textiles, and Diverse Arts. There is also a special category for young artists.

In addition to shopping Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. directly from the artists, visitors can enjoy entertainment on the stage on the Santa Fe Plaza as well as ceremonial dances and performances in the streets. Be wowed at the Native American Regalia Showcase on the plaza stage between 9 and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Then, when you get hungry, grab something from one of the food booths or dine at one of Santa Fe’s famed restaurants on and near the plaza.

Admission to the market is free. However, tickets to the premier events sell out fast! Plan now if you want to attend the Saturday night gala, previews, and Sunday’s prestigious and very popular Native Fashion Show. This much-celebrated event will be held at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on Sunday, August 17, at 3 p.m. Tickets will sell out, so reserve yours soon!

Art collectors from across the world gather in Santa Fe during Indian Market to be part of a week that celebrates Native artists. There are numerous other related events happening, many of which are listed in the Artist Directory & Booth Guide in the Around Town Events article on page 113. Find special opportunities to meet artists at galleries, sneak peeks of award-winning art, musical performances, and much more in that section of the guide.

This year, SWAIA received more than 1,300 artist submissions and over 1,000 Indigenous North American artists were juried into the prestigious market.

Indian Market Week kicks off Thursday, August 14, with the by-invitation-only Get Indigenous Film Festival (GIFF) opening night party at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (contact SWAIA if you are interested in attending). GIFF continues with the premiere of several short films by Indigenous filmmakers on Friday and a Saturday brunch with filmmakers and artists, which is free with advance registration (get details on page 31 of the guide).

Other special events include Friday’s 2025 Best of Show Awards Ceremony and Luncheon and the General Preview of Award-Winning Art at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, just a few blocks from the plaza.

SWAIA’s Saturday evening gala and live auction will be at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. It benefits the education and advocacy work of the Southwest Association for Indian Arts, celebrating Native American art, fashion, and culture with a courtyard cocktail hour, seated dinner, a runway fashion show of Indigenous designs, and a live auction. Tickets for this popular event go fast, so be sure you reserve yours today.

There’s much more going on during Santa Fe Indian Market 2025 and you can find all the events and information in our official Santa Fe Indian Market Artist Directory & Booth Guide. Pick it up around town, or flip through the interactive guide at the top of this article.

Allan Houser (1914–1994) stands as one of the most influential Indigenous American sculptors and painters in contemporary art history. Born to Chiricahua Apache parents who were held as prisoners of war, Houser’s path to artistic prominence represents a powerful narrative of Native American resilience and cultural expression.

His masterful drawings, paintings, and sculptural works in bronze, stone, and steel have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide, including the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, and the British Royal Collection. Houser’s distinctive sculptural style blends traditional Apache motifs with modernist aesthetics, creating a visual language that bridges cultural divides while celebrating Indigenous heritage.

Houser’s work is celebrated not only for its technical brilliance but also for its powerful storytelling elements. Throughout his career, he used his art as a medium to preserve and share the rich oral traditions of his Apache heritage. Each sculpture tells a story—whether depicting cultural ceremonies, family relationships, or spiritual connections—creating a visual narrative that continues his people’s tradition of passing down wisdom and history through generations.

At the Santa Fe sculpture garden, visitors can experience the full breadth of Houser’s artistic vision, from abstract representations to figurative sculptures depicting Native American dancers, warriors, and families. Each piece reflects Houser’s connection to his Apache roots and his revolutionary impact on Southwest artistic traditions.

As a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and an inductee to the Native American Hall of Fame, Houser’s legacy continues to influence generations of Native American artists and stands as a benchmark of Indigenous artistic excellence in the American Southwest.

Celebrate Mother’s Day Amidst Allan Houser Art

Make Mother’s Day 2025 memorable by experiencing the narrative power of Houser’s work. As storytelling was integral to his artistic legacy, this celebration offers families an opportunity to connect with their own stories while surrounded by sculptures that eloquently speak of heritage, resilience, and the enduring bonds between generations.

What do you have planned for your Father’s Day weekend in Santa Fe? While it is traditionally considered a weekend for Dad to fire up the grill, how about taking him out for some family fun and a meal out instead? And if you haven’t grabbed the perfect gift for the dads in your life, we have some great shopping ideas, too.

sculpture garden at Glenn Green Galleries.Adventures for Father’s Day

Let’s plan around the main event: what to do with dear ol’ Dad? One big event that kicks off Father’s Day weekend is Currents Santa Fe. This 10-day celebration explores the intersection of science and aesthetics in locations around the city.

If Dad is an art aficionado, how about a visit to Glenn Green Galleries in Tesuque? Explore the beautiful five-acre sculpture garden and visit the indoor galleries for art by greats like Allan Houser.

Up for a day trip on Father’s Day weekend? How about boarding the Sky Railway? On Father’s Day, you can choose from the Lamy Brunch Run, the Acoma Lamy Brunch Run, the Santa Fe Scenic, and the Acoma Cocktails & Rails. If you take him the day before Father’s Day, your Saturday options include the Santa Fe Scenic, New Mexico Ale Trail, and The Stargazer.

Another getaway is heading to Angel Fire for the three-day Balloons Over Angel Fire high mountain hot air balloon event. Admission is free and there’s more going on than balloon launches. If you get there early and volunteer to crew for a balloon, you may even score Dad a free balloon ride!

Flamenco DancersPlaces to Eat & Unwind for Father’s Day

If your Father’s Day adventure doesn’t already include a meal out, we have some of Santa Fe’s favorite restaurants to recommend!

How about Joe’s Dining for diner food made from fresh, local ingredients? Or Tomasita’s, famous for traditional New Mexican cuisine since 1974? You can’t miss by taking him to either of the Pantry restaurants, which opened in 1948 and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Another Santa Fe staple is Posa’s Tamale Factory & Restaurant, serving breakfast burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, and their traditional tamales. Read more about Posa’s in our Heating It Up story.

Escondido is the place to try for upscale Northern Mexican options like succulent chicken mole, barbacoa, al pastor, and carne asada, sourced locally for brunch and dinner.

If Dad prefers to pile his plate high, take him to Del Charro, where the lunch special and dinner plates are stacked high with Santa Fe flavors.

You can also make an evening of it with Dad at Rio Chama Sunday evening where you can enjoy dinner. Check the Tumbleroot schedule for live entertainment and cold drinks to share with Dad on his special day.

High Desert Angler Fishing Santa Fe New MexicoWhere to Shop for Dad

Well, it all depends on what your dad enjoys! If he’d appreciate a special bottle of wine or spirits, you can’t go wrong by asking the experts at Susan’s Fine Wine & Spirits for advice. Their selection is the best in Santa Fe and you’re sure to find something he’ll enjoy sipping.

If you want to give Dad something he can wear to remind him of your love every day, how about a visit to Santa Fe Goldworks on the plaza? They offer a beautiful selection of very New Mexico rings and pendants for men.

For antiques, collectibles, art, and more, visit Stephen’s, A Consignment Gallery, to find something uniquely him. They’re holding an Antiques Roadshow Buying Event June 16 – 18 and have two estate sales scheduled those days, so be sure to click over to their website for details.

If he’s into fishing, stop by High Desert Angler. It’s a full-service fly shop, school, and guide service, so you can get Dad some fishing gear or gift him a trip he’ll never forget!

Envisioning some relaxation time with the family? How about a spa day for Dad (and everyone else!)?

Finally, Big Jo True Value is the place to go if your dad is a DIY kind of guy and nothing would make him happier than a new power tool!

Santa Fe, New Mexico is home to several historical land sights and tourist attractions. With the rich culture of New Mexico being evident at every nook and turn of the city, it’s hard to not love everything about it. But along with their historical virtue, it inhabits a little bit of the modern as well by surfacing several fine art galleries in Santa Fe, NM. So, if you’re an art lover who happens to be in Santa Fe, then this is the place you should definitely visit.

David Copher Gallery

Home to some of David Copher’s greatest works, David Copher Gallery is amongst the most popular fine art galleries in Santa Fe, NM which is home to several exhibits ranging from paintings to sculptures, and this is fairly new collection, ladies pendants. The thing that is most loved about this gallery is David Copher’s use of his passions that is so perfectly displayed through his paintings. For example, his most popular artwork would include coyotes and a “bull rider” which is inspired by his love for “rodeo-clowns” and the depiction of its surroundings. If you ever get a chance to visit this gallery, you’ll be surprised at how everyday inspirations could be used to create such spectacular pieces of art.

The David Copher Gallery is known to be famous for the “exhibit parties” hosted every time new exhibits are put up. The endless use of new and improved creations brings to life the depiction of a working mind through creativity as well as elegance held in the paintings.

Ladies Pendants

David Copher’s Gallery has maintained its status of being the most famous fine art galleries in Santa Fe, NM by making sure art lovers, such as himself, have something new and improved to look over every day. While the gallery exhibits a vast variety of artwork including paintings, David never fails to surprise his audience with wonderful new displays. His most recent work, which is an exhibit of wearable ladies pendants, has upgraded the gallery’s rank and given people something new to love. This collection is not some ordinary jewelry made out of stone, but, in fact, takes the ancient culture and heritage to create adornments which speaks of history as well as class.

These pendants are inspired by the rich cultural background of Anasazi and using the relics as an idea of a completely new style of jewelry. Not only does it use precious stones and metals, its design is a perfect depiction of ancient styles of jewelry that women used to wear. Bringing a modernized touch to antique necklaces, is the perfect way to infuse creativity with history and thus resulting in a formation of excellence.

The David Copher Gallery is a must visit for all the art enthusiasts who feel the need for a different kind of inspiration and for all those people who have an eye to catch the perfect that this gallery has to offer. If you’re amongst those people then don’t forget to drop by here and enjoy a range of different artwork.

The museum is dedicated to artist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) and her works, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum was opened for public in 1997. It possesses a collection of 3000 works, 140 of these being oil paintings from O’Keeffe, 700 drawings, and a great many works dating from the year 1901 to 1984, including works of modern art. The museum offers a chance for visitors to not only glimpse the artist’s work but her source of inspiration and creative process. See the light and landscape that produced one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. She herself described it as: “the wideness and wonder of the world as she lived in it”.

O’keeffe’s art style is certainly unique and those who observe will recognize her abstractions and the depiction of natural wonders that includes flowers, bones, leaves, shells, and rocks. Her art also includes paintings of architecture unique to Northern New Mexico and cityscapes of New York. The museum is certainly worth visiting throughout the year as different sets of pieces are showcased. The museum undertakes the responsibility of maintaining the properties of O’Keefe, a research center and library.

Georgio O’Keeffe was born on 15th of November 1887, and grew up on a farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. During the years 1905 to 1906, she studied at the art institute of Chicago. She initially studied the traditional realism art style, but soon was exposed to the ideas of Arthur Weasly Dow. He influenced her into the trend of modern art and she embarked on her own journey of experimentation. Her personal search yielded results and she became one of the first American artists to produce pure abstraction. She was forced into retirement in 1984 due to failing eyesight.

Tours

Trips to O’Keefe’s property, which includes her homes and studios, are scheduled via appointment if you are interested.  Her home is located 60 miles northwest of Santa Fe, in the village of Abiquiu. The museum has certainly invested into technology, allowing self-guided app tours and membership. Do visit the website for inquiries and details on these trips.

Research center

The research center focuses on exploring, advancements and conceptualizes new ideas on Artist Georgia O’Keefe, American modernism and Museum studies. New ideas are expounded through academic activities, fellowships and other programs.

Modernism and Modern art

A majority of the museum’s activities are dedicated to American modernism. The philosophical movements and cultural trends of the 19th and 20th centuries define modernism and the changes it has brought. The pioneers of modernism felt that the traditional quickly become dated and ill-suited to their lives. Everything from art, architecture, religious faith, philosophy, sciences and social organization did not fit with the modern industrialized world.

Related with modernism is modern art, it dates approximately from the period 1860 to 1970 that follows the theme of experimentation and abandonment of traditions. Experimentation with colors and new perceptions of natural or imagined subjects of interest, the art style was a radical shift away from norms. New artists of the era revolutionized the world with multi colored works of expression. The pioneers of modern art were romantics, realists and modernists.

The transformative power of live music collides with that of fine art in SITE Santa Fe’s upcoming OFF THE RAILS Annual Benefit and Concert, coming up on Thursday, June 22, 2023. This one-of-a-kind experience raises vital funds for SITE Santa Fe’s internationally recognized and critically acclaimed contemporary art programming, and this year, features performances by art-pop sensations Helado Negro and Lido Pimienta.

Last year’s inaugural OFF THE RAILS event was a vibrant success, gathering over 1,000 national arts patrons, gallerists, collectors, artists, and music enthusiasts, and setting the tone for a record-breaking year of 35,000 visitors at SITE Santa Fe.

“I am deeply grateful to the 1000+ people who came out to support SITE Santa Fe at last year’s first-ever OFF THE RAILS Benefit and Concert,” said SITE Santa Fe Executive Director Louis Grachos. “Inspired by the success of this huge celebration of art and community, we are delighted and honored to present our second annual event featuring the extraordinary music talents of Helado Negro and Lido Pimienta. OFF THE RAILS is the perfect way to enjoy a summer evening, and we can’t wait to gather people together at SITE Santa Fe and in the beautiful Railyard Park.”

An Evening to Remember

OFF THE RAILS begins with a cocktail party as guests experience powerful exhibitions by Bruce Nauman and Rachel Rose. A live auction conducted by Sotheby’s will follow–featuring major works of art by Bruce Nauman, Rachel Rose, Pedro Reyes, Rebecca Ward, Paula Castillo, Max Cole, and Helen Pashgain – during an elevated culinary experience of local ingredients and curated wine pairings.

The night reaches its zenith in a sensational pairing of internationally renowned musicians Helado Negro and Lido Pimienta at an all-ages concert on the lawn in the neighboring Railyard Park. Bring your picnic blanket and enjoy an unforgettable night of music under the stars, or from the VIP Lounge with a private bar and complimentary food and drink. Refreshments from local food trucks and breweries will be available for purchase inside the gates.

Who’s Who at OFF THE RAILS

Founded in 1995 to establish the first international contemporary art biennial in the United States, SITE Santa Fe is a non-collecting art institution committed to supporting new developments in contemporary art, encouraging artistic exploration, and expanding traditional museum experiences. SITE Santa Fe also presents a wide range of public and educational programs that include conversations with artists and curators, performances, film screenings, concerts, hands-on workshops, and collaborations with dozens of local schools and community organizations.

“Escape is never out there; you have to go inward,” reflects Roberto Carlos Lange the musician known as Helado Negro. His songs unapologetically look forward and articulate love’s urgency in the current state of the world. Lange’s faith in survival persists in the sheer buoyancy of the drum beat, soaring and plucky synth and string arrangements, and his voice climbing new registers. The ultimate effect suggests embracing the dark of the unknown with openness, pleasure, and growth, rather than tuning out beneath monumental forces and anxieties.

Lido Pimienta is a Colombian-born, Toronto-based global beats trailblazer. An outsider in adolescence, Lido was known as a “weird artistic tomboy” for not adhering to expected norms and identifying as an Afro-Indigenous, queer feminist. Her new, highly anticipated album, Miss Colombia is a canvas for introspection, bringing her closer to home through 11 new original songs boldly celebrating musical hybridity. Digging deeply into the history of Afro-Latin music, Miss Colombia reflects on Lido’s personal experiences with anti-blackness, love, self-love, loss, politics in Colombia, Indigenous inequality, and racism. Her album La Papessa was awarded the 2017 Polaris Music Prize.

This year’s OFF THE RAILS event is presented in collaboration with the newly formed Lensic 360, an extension of Lensic Performing Arts Center programming that presents concerts at venues throughout New Mexico and offers top-quality, free community programs. “We are very excited about the continued growth of OFF THE RAILS as we go into year two,” says Jamie Lenfestey of Lensic 360. “Bringing amazing music to the Railyard in collaboration with SITE SANTA FE is the type of dynamic event creation that I have always been proudest of in my career. Off The Rails 2023 and beyond is going to be an amazing event for Santa Fe.”
