Vital Spaces Opens Santa Fe Community Art Closet
Row of art supplies

Vital Spaces will open a Community Art Closet on January 23, 2021, at the SW Annex on the midtown campus at 1600 St. Michael’s Drive. Similar in concept to community food pantries, the Community Art Closet is stocked with art supplies for all ages and skill levels, available to the Santa Fe community for free.

“Creative expression is healing. Now, as more people lose jobs and kids are attending school remotely, art is becoming more and more inaccessible. Vital Spaces is working to change that,” says Vital Spaces Co-Director Hannah Yohalem, “By providing free art supplies to our community, Vital Spaces is helping sustain Santa Fe’s exceptional artistic talent of all ages.”

The Community Art Closet

The Community Art Closet is a true community effort, stocked with donated supplies from individuals and partner organizations like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA), and Meow Wolf. Many groups in Santa Fe have been working diligently to get art supplies out to public school students throughout the pandemic. Vital Spaces sees the Community Art Closet as a supplement to those important projects — creating a centralized location in the middle of town where anyone can come for the tools needed to pursue their creative endeavors.

“We’re thrilled to have contributed arts education materials to the Community Art Closet,” says MoCNA Senior Manager of Museum Education, Winoka Yepa, “I love that Santa Feans will be able to access materials and information supplied by many different arts organizations in one place.”

The Community Art Closet will open on January 23, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Ongoing hours will be 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on every third Saturday of the month. The first location is the SW Annex on the midtown campus at 1600 St Michael’s Drive. If there is enough demand, Vital Spaces will open a second Community Art Closet at their location at the Outlet Mall on the southside of Santa Fe.
